Menorca Excursions
There are many different types of excursions available for you to enjoy
whilst holidaying in Menorca. Some of them you can make your own way to by local
transport and others are more for booking with your holiday representative or
local travel agent if you are an independent traveller.
Along with the usual days out to various resorts and beaches or shopping centres
there are two excursions which usually appeal to those travelling with children.
The first one of these is the AquaRock Menorca which is aquatic fun at its best
for both kids and adults alike. When you have had enough of the Kamikaze slide,
along with several other what only could be described as "wet rides" you can dry
yourself off and do a few circuits on the go karts. There's also the opportunity
of having a go on a trampoline to get rid of all that excess energy! Before you
leave, why not have a fun family round of mini golf?
The second one of these two excursions is the Club San Jaime. According to those
who have attended it is the top children's attraction on the island. It is
located in Son Bou and is a water theme park with the younger members of the
family in mind.
Moving on to more general types of excursions which are appealing to most age
groups, you will find that as Menorca is an island, many of the days out on
offer are related to the sea. There are all manner of boat trips to go on, from
an hourly pleasure trip searching for dolphins, to hiring a yacht for a private
charter. If sport fishing is your thing, then a half day trip to try to catch
your dinner is available from the harbour, or if you prefer to simply look at
the marine life (instead of eating it) you would be best to take a glass bottom
boat ride where you will discover all manner of life under the ocean waves. You
can even have a day with one of the famous dive schools if you fancy getting up
closer.
However, if you prefer to be on dry land there are many interesting places to
have a look at on Menorca. Take for example, a visit to the town of Ciutadella
on the western side of the island. This is such a trendy and stylish place and
best known for its fabulous fish and seafood restaurants. Ciutadella was
originally the capital of the island of Menorca and has many sites just waiting
for you to visit, such as Castell San Nicholas, which these days is used as an
exhibition gallery but back in 17th century it was a defence tower. Cuitadella
also boasts a stunning cathedral which was rebuilt from the origins of a mosque
in 1287. One good thing you will realise as you browse around this town is the
amount of sidewalk cafes is has, perfect for a spot of people watching whilst
enjoying a café con leche (milky coffee) and deciding what is next on the
itinerary.
On the road between
Mahon and Ciutadella you will find the Naveta des Toudos.
Menorca has over a thousand pre-historic monuments and this is probably the best
known one of all. It is an ancient burial site and claims to be the oldest
roofed building in the whole of Spain. Admission to look at this fascinating
piece of history is free of charge.
If you are not afraid of heights, then Monte Toro is a must. It is Menorca's
highest point and right at the very top there is a convent which is the home of
Franciscan nuns who are happy to open their doors to the public throughout the
summer months.
If you enjoy a flutter on the horses, then you really should have an afternoon
down at the trotting races. This is an extremely popular sport in the Balearics
and for over two hundred years now these races are held during the weekend in
Mahon and Ciutadella. It is different to normal horse racing in that the riders
have to keep the horses at trotting speed and not allow the animals to break
into a gallop. It is great fun to watch and even more exciting if you have
placed a bet on a horse and it comes in first.
